Mindfulness with Dr. Mark Sherman
The culture and pace of life in modern society carries many challenges. Work and family demands, the state of the world and the sheer exhaustion of navigating it all can lead to a pervasive numbness we refer to as burnout. Healing can happen. However, it requires us to allow, and care for, our own suffering in order to reconnect with ourselves, our joy and our places of meaning. From this vantage we can once again see the miracle and blessing that is unfolding all around. Retreat provides the space and quiet needed to begin this healing.
Join Dr. Mark Sherman on the shores of the sacred Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. The focus of this retreat is rediscovering meaning and joy in our lives as humans, and to learn how to carry this into all that we say and do. This 7 day retreat will teach basic and more advanced meditation skills, allowing significant practice times for formal and informal mindfulness, while immersed in the restful and picturesque sanctuary that is Kawoq Forest. Silent sitting periods of meditation will be interspersed with walking practice; yoga; mindful inquiry; group discussion; and time for self exploration and rest. If participants are interested a Mayan Sacred Medicine Ceremony is also available mid-retreat.
Lake Atitlan, considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, is also a traditional place of worship and sanctity for the Mayan people. Located in a dormant volcanic crater in the mountains outside Antigua, Lake Atitlan is surrounded by lush forests, volcanoes and villages where traditional Mayan culture still unfolds amidst the intersperse of the modern day.
This retreat will take place at Kawoq Forest, located in the lush jungle outside of San Marcos de Laguna. Accommodations include private, semi-private, double and quad shares. Arrivals and introductions will be in the late afternoon/ early evening of Monday, February 10, 2024 and the retreat will end after lunch on Sunday, February 16, 2024. Tuition includes accommodation, 2 meals per day (brunch and dinner), and transportation (as a group) up from, and back to the village of San Marcos de Laguna. Transport from Guatemala city airport can also be arranged (please arrive in Guatemala City prior to 1pm in order for transport to the retreat centre for late afternoon on the 10th)
